How Immutable Backup Protects You From Ransomware

Ransomware often goes after backups first. Immutable backup keeps a copy that cannot be changed, so you can always recover.

Table of Contents

Modern ransomware does not only encrypt your live files. Many attacks also look for your backups and try to delete or encrypt them, so you have no option but to pay. Immutable backup is designed to stop that.

What does immutable mean?

An immutable backup cannot be altered, overwritten or deleted once it has been written, for a period you set. Not by a user, not by an administrator account that has been compromised, and not by malware.

Why it matters

If an attacker gains access to your network, they may also gain access to your backup tools and credentials. A backup that can be changed is only as safe as those credentials. An immutable copy gives you a recovery point that does not depend on them.

How it fits into your protection

  • Keep regular backups so the latest copy is recent
  • Make at least one copy immutable
  • Hold it offsite, away from your network
  • Test restores so you know it works

After an attack

Immutable backup does not stop an attack, but it gives you a clean place to recover from. Before restoring, scan the data and close the way the attacker got in, so you are not reinfected.

Is it right for you?

If losing your data would seriously harm your business, then yes. It is one of the most effective protections against ransomware, and it works best alongside good security habits and staff training.
