Protecting Business Continuity: Lessons from Recent Cyber Attacks

What recent cyber attacks teach us about keeping a business running, and how tested, offsite backups make recovery possible.

Table of Contents

When a cyber attack hits, the businesses that recover fastest are rarely the ones with the most expensive tools. They are the ones that planned for it. A few lessons come up again and again.

1. Assume an attack will get through

Firewalls and anti-virus reduce risk, but nothing removes it. Plan for the day something gets past them, and decide in advance how you will carry on working.

2. Keep backups the attacker cannot reach

Modern ransomware often looks for backups first. Keep at least one copy offsite, and ideally one that cannot be changed or deleted.

3. Test your restores

A backup that has never been restored is a hope, not a plan. Test regularly, and time how long a full recovery takes.

4. Know who does what

Write down who calls whom, who talks to customers and who decides when to restore. In an incident, hesitation costs hours.

5. Look at your suppliers

Many incidents begin with a supplier or a shared service. Ask how your key providers protect and recover their systems.
