Cloud backup means automatically copying your business data to a secure location away from your office, usually a data centre, so you can get it back if something goes wrong. It protects you from the things that catch businesses out: a failed server, an accidental deletion, a fire, theft or a ransomware attack.
How cloud backup works
A small piece of software, called an agent, runs on your servers, computers or cloud accounts. On a schedule you choose, it sends your data over an encrypted connection to the provider’s data centre. After the first full copy, only the changes are sent, which keeps backups quick and light on your network.
What can you back up?
- File servers and shared folders
- Virtual machines on VMware or Hyper-V
- Laptops and desktops
- Databases and business applications
- Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace data
Getting your data back
When you need something restored, you choose what you want and the point in time you want it from, then restore it through a web portal. That might be a single file or a whole server. A good service scans restored data for malware before it goes back onto your systems.
What to look for
Look for UK-hosted data, strong encryption, clear pricing and real support. Ask where your data is stored, who can access it, and how quickly you could recover in practice.
